What is a peripheral pump?
A peripheral pump (also known as a peripheral impeller pump, turbine pump, or regenerative pump) is a special type of centrifugal pump.
The impeller runs in a peripheral ring channel, in which the medium flows over the impeller and channel several times, gradually absorbing energy.
This allows relatively high delivery pressures to be achieved with very small delivery volumes.
When are peripheral pumps the right choice?
Peripheral pumps are suitable when small volume flows with significantly increased pressure are to be operated, e.g., in cooling and air conditioning systems, service water systems, circulation systems, boiler feed systems, or in mechanical engineering. They thus close the gap between classic centrifugal pumps (larger quantities, lower pressure) and positive displacement pumps.
For which media are peripheral wheel pumps suitable—and for which are they not?
The peripheral pumps shown here are designed for clean water and water-like, non-abrasive liquids Designed without solids or long fibers.
Typical examples are cooling water, service water, or other neutral media that do not chemically attack the materials (gray cast iron, stainless steel, brass).
Peripheral wheel pumps are generally suitable for heavily contaminated, sandy, highly viscous, or chemically aggressive media not suitable.

Are peripheral pumps self-priming?
Due to their design, peripheral pumps have good pressure build-up characteristics, but in the standard version they are normally aspirated.
You need a filled suction line or sufficient inlet pressure.
The T/TP, CX, and SAL series listed in our catalog are designed as normal-aspiration centrifugal pumps with peripheral impellers.
For applications with significant suction height or recurring air in the system, we recommend our self-priming centrifugal pumps from the separate program.
